Clarkson University seeks a Director of Philanthropy Research to manage an operation that focuses on prospect identification methods, sophisticated retrieval, analysis and application of information and reliable relationship management systems to support Philanthropy goals and the day-to-day needs of Philanthropy staff. Organizationally within the Gift Planning office, the Research director uses wealth-assessment formulas and data mining, and communicates information to Philanthropy staff for relationship planning toward a solicitation. The director establishes and implements appropriate research performance goals and measurements, and evaluates Research's partnership with the fundraising process. The director promotes the performance, contributions, and needs of the Research function to the organization by tying them to the Philanthropy and Alumni Relations plan through data reports, and written summaries, and through interaction with senior fundraising staff and campaign volunteers.
Description of duties and responsibilities:
Establish and manage a Research operation that effectively integrates prospect information within the University's campaign. Participate as an integral strategist and advisor in the fundraising process.
Develop and execute on a plan of robust research to build a pyramid of prospective donors for campaign success. Own and take responsibility for identifying and qualifying a sufficient number of prospects for frontline fundraisers.
Devise plans, policies, systems, and procedures that establish, direct, track and report on the Research operation's performance regarding prospect identification, evaluation, and management, including metrics for integration of the operation into the Philanthropy campaign.
Identify new prospects and qualify existing donors through gathering and analysis of data to determine giving capacity, by evaluating wealth indicators via web-based tools, internet resources, internal and external print resources, and discussions with fundraising staff.
Use a wide variety of digital and print media to find and evaluate evidence of philanthropic interests and inclination to give.
Maintain a prospect tracking system that integrates research profiles, relationship plans, and strategies with outcomes. Monitor industry, business and financial news relevant to major prospects; track relevant stocks and companies; interpret biographical and financial data.
Accurately analyze, interpret and evaluate information about prospects, and use written and verbal communication methods to present interpretations of how to apply strategically within Philanthropy.
Create and maintain on a regular basis comprehensive profiles on top prospects, including gift capacity ratings; prepare and present information at campaign meetings; create and maintain protocols and formats for reports and profiles.
Prepare briefing reports for key University officials in advance of events and meetings.
Participate in meetings and events as appropriate; oversee functional budget; manage subscriptions and evaluation tools; remain current in all research methods and tools; maintain the highest ethical standards of confidentiality and discretion.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Research, investigative or similar training preferred. Two to four years experience in a development, information services or research-related setting using web-based tools, computerized databases and internet resources highly desirable. Some financial analysis experience beneficial. This detail-oriented position requires a high level of computer proficiency, with the ability to organize, analyze and synthesize material from multiple sources and articulate results clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing as well as prioritize and manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines. The individual must be self-motivated and adept working both independently and within a team structure. Experience with software such as Microsoft Office required.
