Harvey Mudd College

Director of Leadership Gifts

Description:
--------------------
Primary purpose: The Director of Leadership Gifts will work to identify,
cultivate, and solicit donors for the Annual Fund by overseeing an aggressive
program inclusive of mail, email, phonathon, and other means to enable the
college to achieve its annual fundraising goals. In order to meet the two
primary goals for the Annual Fund—expanding the general donor base while
increasing the number of leadership donors—the Director must be capable of
achieving multiple goals on a yearly basis. The Director will manage a team of
professional fundraisers who will work together to expand the donor base through
a strategic direct- and electronic-mail program, coordinated with a student- and

the Director will implement a leadership giving program with a highly personal
approach to increase the number of annual leadership gifts, defined as gifts of
$2,000 and above, from all constituencies. Monthly travel is required in order
to cultivate, solicit, and recruit key donors and volunteers. The Director will
revamp and enhance selected leadership giving recognition societies as a means
of communicating the need for donor leadership while providing unique
stewardship opportunities for society members.

Essential Functions Include:

•Solicit annual fund gifts and carry a portfolio of annual fund leadership
prospects.

•Develop and oversee the strategic annual fund campaign with the goal to
increase both dollars raised and participation from all college constituencies.
The campaign will incorporate direct mail and phonathons as well as
electronically-based and face-to-face cultivation and solicitations.

• Coordinate the Annual Fund gift acknowledgement and stewardship process, in
collaboration with Advancement Services.

stewardship approaches for the entire donor base as well as key leadership
donors.

programmatic approaches.

•Coordinate presidential and trustee meetings with leadership donors for
cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship purposes.

•Serve as the primary liaison to the Alumni Fund Committee of the Alumni
Association.

•Establish a special gifts committee comprised of leadership donors who will
solicit others during the year, working with the Assistant Director and the
Senior Director for Advancement (Principal Gifts).

•Develop and implement moves management strategies to identify and recruit
donors and key fundraising volunteers, in coordination with the Major Gifts and
Research teams.

•Play a key role in the implementation of Alumni Weekend, Family Weekend,
Parent Orientation, alumni quarterly board meetings, and other special events as
needed.

•Manage two director-track and one support staff positions, including hiring,
goal-setting, and performance evaluations.

•Other duties, as assigned.

comprehensive campaign is highly desirable. Excellent persuasive writing and
verbal communication skills and the ability to articulate the need for annual
support to the college’s constituencies. Knowledge of various direct mail tools
and assessment standards to determine effectiveness. Excellent leadership and
interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with Office of
College Advancement team members, volunteers, and students. A high degree of
creativity, enterprise and the capacity to inspire staff and volunteers. Ability
to exercise independence in implementing responsibilities. Due to travel
expectations, the Director must be comfortable remotely supervising staff and
programs while in the field.
