The Associate Director will assist in the planning and implementation of planned gift fundraising activities. The Office of Gift Planning is charged with the identification, qualification, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals making planned gifts to the University of Michigan. The Associate Director assists in setting the goals for the gift planning program in concert with other university development programs in the various schools, colleges and units, and manages a national pool of individual planned giving prospects with responsibility for prospect qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. He or she also acts as a general resource and advisor for all planned giving activities within the University.

We also provide fundraising leadership through the stimulation and facilitation of healthy, productive and life-long relationships with our colleagues, alumni, friends, foundations and corporations.
OGP Mission: As part of the Office of University Development, the Office of Gift Planning helps maximize private support by providing expertise, in collaboration with development professionals across the institution, for the cultivation, design, administration, and stewardship of planned gifts.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
45% Participate in the development of a departmental prospect pool and advance individual relationships that result in philanthropic contributions, with a focus on planned gifts.
Manage or staff a portfolio of 150 to 200 planned giving prospects.
Identify and qualify a portfolio of prospects with the capacity to make gifts of $100,000 and more; assist donors with gift planning strategies, including financial and estate planning, tax law and real estate; develop and execute cultivation strategies that result in the closure of outright and planned gifts.
Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects.
Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations and ensure effective stewardship.
Gain comprehensive understanding of the priorities of the University and makes a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific University needs.
Develop materials used by development officers, deans, directors, vice presidents, the provost and the president for meetings, visits or individual contacts.
30% Provide planned giving information as appropriate to University development staff and donors. Serve as liaison to the U-M Health System, mastering the overlapping collaborations between and among disciplines, creating strategies to maximize donor involvement. Build relationships with Health System fundraisers to advance planned gift efforts; meet regularly with Development Directors and/or individual officers as appropriate. Prepare appropriate responses to planned gift donor inquiries. Serve as liaison to additional schools, colleges or units, as assigned.
20% Participate in the development of departmental goals and apply resources of the larger team to accomplish those goals.
Set priorities for multiple short-term and long-term projects based on goals for the Gift Planning team.
Participate in development of department objectives and strategies; develop tactics to meet individual and group goals.
Manage projects, events and/or special constituent bases that support the offices of Gift Planning and University Development objectives.
Responsible for appropriate and effective reporting of activities and for monitoring resources and expenditures associated with his/her program and portfolio.
5% Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree.
5 to 7 years experience in gift planning and/or a related field.
Sound organizational ability, a high degree of creativity and initiative; the ability to project the unique aims and values of the University of Michigan to its donors and alumni.
Excellent communications skills, coupled with strong writing and presentation skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment, and autonomously when appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proven success in gift closure at the six-and seven-figure level.
Expertise and experience in finance, tax, or estate planning.
Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors.
Personal computer and database management skills.
Knowledge or experience with development data.
