The Director of Stewardship Programs is the University’s senior stewardship specialist, responsible for developing standards, procedures, and tools that enable a community of decentralized fund-raising units to act with consistency and to effectively coordinate acknowledgement, recognition, and reporting activities so that the donor’s experience with U-M is of the highest quality and as consistent as possible. In addition, the director will also serve as personal steward and/or executive liaison with VIP donors requiring special handling.

Supervises indirectly: 2 professional, 1 support staff
80% Leadership of U-M Stewardship Program
Provides strategic direction to a comprehensive stewardship function, including gift receipting, gift acknowledgment, donor recognition, and stewardship reporting.
Evaluates effectiveness, quality, and efficiency of all aspects of stewardship programs on an ongoing basis with an eye for opportunities for quality enhancement of the donor experience at U-M.
Ensures appropriate level of product development to support overall stewardship of donors and their contributions. This includes development of processes and products that support individual school, college, and unit stewardship efforts as well as those that are implemented across the institution.
Develops standards and guidelines for university-wide donor stewardship practices and ensures their communication and implementation, including OUD infrastructure to support that implementation.
Collaborates with leadership of other OUD and U-M department, such as Development Services, OUD Talent Management and Financial Administration, and U-M Financial Operations to ensure systems and tools are in place to support outstanding stewardship practices.
Oversees creation and quality control of OUD communications that support comprehensive gift receipting, acknowledgement and stewardship reporting.
Working with fundraising officers at all gift levels, designs targeted programs that support particular objectives, e.g. individualized VIP stewardship plans, financial and narrative reporting for endowed funds, marketing programs to promote increased or consistent giving, recognition events, etc.
Co-chairs a regular forum of stewardship specialists with Director of Individual Stewardship, for discussion of strategy and sharing of best practices across 40+ individual fund-raising units.
Serves as a senior ombudsman and liaison for University executives or donors whose questions require investigation into financial or data management matters.
Serves as an expert resource for other university staff regarding practices for high-quality stewardship of donors, alumni, and friends, including presentations, training, and consultation.
20% Staff Management
Provides leadership and supervision to Stewardship Department staff, including hiring, performance evaluation, and coaching for performance.
Ensures appropriate delegation of responsibilities and projects to other staff.
Assists in the skill and development of other Stewardship Department staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience.
7 – 10 years experience in a fund-raising, public relations, or senior customer service position, preferably in higher education or other large, complex institution.
Demonstrated leadership ability to develop strategic plans, implement programs, organize, initiate, and motivate.
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement programs in collaboration with other managers.
Strong management skills and proven ability to lead a team of individuals towards a common goal.
Sound organizational ability; a high degree of energy, creativity and initiative; the ability to project the unique aims and values of the University of Michigan to its donors and alumni.
Intellectual curiosity, creativity, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors.
Skilled with personal computers, Microsoft office software programs, and databases.
