Director of Gift Planning

The Director oversees the identification, cultivation, solicitation and
stewardship of donors who are planning gifts to the college that will be
realized in the future, including those with Smith College bequest intentions,
as well as through a wide variety of other planned giving vehicles. The
Director manages a portfolio of highly rated prospective and past donors whose
primary intent is a planned gift to Smith and/or is in a form other than cash or
stock, as well as providing leadership to the college in current technical, tax,
and legal aspects of gift planning. Through the department’s marketing efforts,
the director provides increased visibility for planned giving opportunities at
the college.
Direct Gift Planning Program: Manage all aspects of the gift planning program,
including oversight for gifts made through bequests, trusts, charitable gift
annuities, and other planned giving vehicles. Plan for the strategic growth of
the program and stay current with technical expertise in the tax and legal
aspects of charitable giving. Oversee the preparation of all related documents
including financial illustrations of proposed gifts and gift agreements. Manage
a prospect pool of primarily planned giving donors, their family members, and
their advisors through off- and on-campus visits and phone consultations related
to their philanthropy and estate planning. Maximize gift potential through a
combination of gift planning vehicles, as well as current gifts to the Smith
Fund and to restricted purposes.
Collaborate with the Office of the Vice President for Finance, the Controller’s
Office, and the college’s legal counsel to monitor and update the college’s gift
acceptance policies and practices. Serve as an internal expert to colleagues
throughout Advancement on written gift agreement documents, including endowment,
real estate and other forms of property. Work with senior college leaders to
review specific gift offers to ensure that they will benefit the college’s
mission and priorities. Serve as the primary Advancement liaison with the
trustee bank, and with other deferred giving bankers and other providers.
Ensure that systems for tracking and recording gifts are in accordance with
college policy and in compliance with all tax and other legal requirements.
Oversee preparation of gift substantiation and year-end tax information.
Provide gift planning leadership and in-house training and education to
colleagues from across Advancement so that they can initiate and utilize gift
planning techniques when appropriate. Actively collaborate with gift officers
and other staff to support the best possible management of highly rated
prospects. Ensure high-quality, long-term stewardship of planned giving donors
in collaboration with the Office of Donor Services. Formulate annual and
long-range stewardship plans to engage current participants.
Management: Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to instill
confidence and trust in donors and colleagues. Hire, train, supervise, coach,
and evaluate the Office of Gift Planning staff. Encourage and support their
professional development. Manage the department’s budget and implement
strategic goals for the use of budgetary resources. Establish and monitor
departmental annual and longer-term goals. Serve as a member of the directors
management team charged with enhancing the overall effectiveness, morale, and
learning capacity of the Advancement team. Ensure that the program works
collaboratively with other units in Advancement and other relevant college
offices. Represent Advancement on institutional committees and task forces.
Proactively participate in campaign planning and execution.
Marketing: Oversee segmented print, web-based and other proactive marketing
plans to increase visibility of the program, and to educate the college’s
various constituencies about the advantages of gift and estate planning.
Promote membership in the Grecourt Society for donors who have included Smith in
their wills. Provide creative stewardship for members. Develop volunteer
opportunities and serve as the primary liaison with class-based and other
planned giving volunteers. Develop and maintain relationships with Smith
alumnae in planned giving affiliated professions. Provide seminars and
workshops on gift planning topics for internal and external audiences. Maintain
an active role in gift planning professional organizations. Performs related
duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent combination of
education and experience preferably in a college environment with a clear record
of accomplishment and strong measurable results. Experience in donor
relations/stewardship plus.
Skills: Ability to manage confidential information with appropriate discretion
and tact are essential, as is a commitment to uphold and to model the Guiding
Principles of Advancement and the AASC. Strong decision-making skills, attentive
listener, willingness to search out answers, ability to recognize when others
need to be involved in activities or decisions. Ability to work autonomously and
make independent judgments; ability to manage several projects simultaneously
and work effectively under time constraints; and prioritize a high-volume of
work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Creativity, curiosity, sense
of humor, high energy level, and an enthusiasm for meeting and working with a
wide range of individuals.
Ability to design multi-media presentations and stewardship pieces, knowledge
and experience with software applications, knowledge and experience working with office communications - i.e., newsletters, Web site, understanding of social
networks and viral marketing, proficient with Microsoft Office suite and
databases
