Dear Friends and Colleagues:

We’ve all heard the buzz about “team building” and “team culture,” and most of us share a belief in a collaborative, mutually supportive work environment. But how do we put this into practice in the real world of Advancement? To see what “team culture” looks like in two real world settings, we spoke to Advancement staff at University of Michigan and Smith College and discovered two very different paths to get to a common goal.

Kristina Lentz, who joined The Woolbright Group as a principal last fall, addresses the prickly question: “How do I keep my major gifts staff motivated and invested and beat the average18 month shelf-life of an MGO when my resources are limited?” Her philosophy and insights are instructive and, coincidentally, tie in nicely with the concept of team culture.

We kick off a new series of articles on engaging leadership (trustees, alumni boards, parents, etc) in “Engaging Leadership: Top 10 Reasons” by Cynthia Woolbright. She provides an overview this month with a David Letterman style list of 10 reasons to make the most of these relationships, which she will expand upon in the next issue of Bright Ideas and beyond.

Don’t forget—we are always interested in your recommendations for topics you would like us to explore in upcoming issues. Send your ideas to: info@woolbrightgroup.com Please look for the next issue of Bright Ideas coming in June.
