Job Summary

The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic and integrated marketing and communications plan to support Michigan Medicine fundraising initiatives. The Director manages a team of full-time professional staff charged with building positive awareness of, and fostering philanthropic support for, research, patient care and medical student education through high-impact print and digital publications, fundraising collateral, videos, event communications and public relations tactics. Additionally, the Director will provide executive level presentations and communications oversight for the Associate Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

The Director serves as a resource for colleagues across the Michigan Medicine Office of Development, helping them achieve their goals by recommending successful communications approaches.

As a member of the Michigan Medicine Development Senior Leadership Team, act as a strategic, collaborative team member and thought leader for Michigan Medicine Development.

Lead the overall strategic direction for the Development Communications Team in support of Michigan Medicine Development priorities.

Manage a team of full-time Development marketing and communications professionals; set the strategic direction for all marketing and communications assets produced by the team.

Provide support for any written communication, presentations, or talking points needed by the Associate Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

Build relationships and work collaboratively with the Office of University Development and Michigan Medicine Department of Communications and Marketing.

Manage and direct resources for planning and executing internal and external communications to reach target audiences, including Medicine at Michigan magazine, websites, newsletters, videos, brochures, press releases, fundraising proposals, event and donor engagement collateral, presentations, letters, targeted emails, executive communications, and other online and print media.

Oversee staff in developing and implementing strategic plans for various fundraising teams; assist internal stakeholders in developing short- and long-term marketing and communications plans.

Facilitate strong collaborative work between the communications team and the fundraising, donor relations & stewardship, events and administrative teams.

Work proactively to identify news and information of potential interest to development audiences and assist in the shaping and distribution of that material to key audiences either directly or in collaboration with communications colleagues.

Establish methods to assess ROI on communications activities, report results to customer groups, and evaluate and refine scope of work based on evidence-based successes.

Plan, develop and administer marketing and communications budget.

Provide staff coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities that increase capabilities and create an environment of engagement.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 10 years of professional experience in communications and marketing.
  • Experience developing comprehensive marketing and communications strategies with multiple media vehicles, including print, digital, video, promotional events and social media to reach and engage target audiences.
  • Strong writing, editing and message development skills; ability to direct and tailor writing styles to fit the audience and voice of the piece.
  • Demonstrated success managing teams of full-time staff and driving initiatives to completion by working proactively and productively with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret information, interviews and data and apply comprehensive knowledge to the completion of complex assignments.
  • Ability to articulate complex scientific concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, organizational and project management skills, and ability to lead a team effort to produce high-quality work on a deadline.
  • Experienced at persuasive writing and articulating a strong case.
  • Ability to organize information, conduct interviews and cull out key statistics
  • Understanding of branding and positioning strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing multiple projects and priorities.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, and interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to frame strategic options and build a case for support.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced atmosphere and effectively meet deadlines while remaining flexible for unplanned opportunities.
  • Solid understanding of how to utilize and implement various media channels and emerging technologies to raise funds for Michigan Medicine.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of customer service and professionalism.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field of study strongly preferred.
  • Marketing and communications experience in development, preferably in an academic and/or health care setting.
  • Communications experience within a health system (or similar organization) that involves the writing of substantive pieces, such as feature articles, press releases, white papers and/or professional presentations.
  • Considerable knowledge of a range of medical and scientific disciplines.
  • Experience interacting with faculty and executive leadership.
  • Understanding of the role philanthropy plays in advancing the mission and goals of Michigan Medicine (or similar organization), as well as general knowledge of fundraising practices.
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
